1701: The History of Iran from Persia to Modern Times

The Middle East has been at a 'crossroads of conflict' for over 2,000 years and remains so today. This course explores the imperialist and religious conflicts of this region, and discusses how Persia and now Iran has been affected.

This course is the first in a roadmap series specifically designed to train and enhance attendees' competencies in the following key subject areas: Iranian Culture, History, Leadership, Geography, Military, Policy and Security.

Attendees will gain an understanding of how and why Iran's current clerical leadership seeks hegemony within Islam and in the Middle East, pursues WMD, savages its own people, and supports terrorism.

Topics covered in the first course will provide students with an understanding of the cultural and religious perspective of Iranian Persian Empire history and modern day Iran.

This course explores the evolution of Islam and Islamic doctrine and the advent of Shi'a Islam in Iran; the main precepts of Shi'a Islam; the clerical hierarchy of Shi'a Islam; and the concept of Velayat-e Faqih (Rule of the Jurisprudent).

It will explore the role of Persian culture and how the tensions between Sunni and Shi'a Islam play in Iranian foreign and security policy.

An overview of the Iranian Constitution will set the framework for a discussion of how Iran's revolutionary leadership perceives its ‘divine' duty to live Islamic law at home and spread it by terror abroad.

The course includes an in-depth discussion of the mindset and tactics of terrorists in the Middle East; ending with a tactical view of Hezbollah and their operations. (5 days)
