13-18 SEPTEMBER 02: The Hanssen movie production came to Washington, DC to film a number of scenes with the actors at various locations. These included the former Soviet Embassy on 16th Street, Union Station, Jefferson Memorial, the Mall, Lafayette Park in front of the White House (click here for photos) and Dulles Airport. Filming for the movie ended on 18 Sept and now it's on to editing and putting together the final product. CI buffs take note: We learned from Director Lawrence Schiller that the real KGB spymasters Viktor Cherkashin and Leonid Shebarshin will be appearing as themselves at the end of the film.
26 JULY-3 AUG 02: CI Centre was on the set of MASTERSPY filming at studios in Toronto, Canada as the technical consultants to the movie. CI Centre professors were there to advise the movie and to serve as FBI agent extras in the shoots. CI Centre professor Oleg Kalugin was also at the studios to film a cameo appearance playing himself in the movie. Director Schiller was quite impressed with Kalugin's natural acting abilities (which isn't surprising since Oleg was a case officer! To recruit people to spy, you have to be an actor.) The film crew will be coming to Washington, DC to film in September.
22 JUNE 02: Actors William Hurt and Wayne Knight visited the CI Centre and professors David Major and Paul Moore to do background research on the parts they will be playing in the movie. They were also shown where Hanssen operated in Northern Virginia, and also met other former coworkers of Hanssen. See more photos below.
16 JUNE 02: Producer/Director Lawrence Schiller announces additional cast chosen for the movie, including Russian actors for the filming in Moscow in July. See right-hand column for more details
10 MAY 02: On the day of Robert Hanssen's sentencing, actor Ron Silver, who plays Hanssen's boss Mike Fine in the movie, visited the CI Centre to do background research for the part. But first in the morning, he accompanied CI Centre professors David Major and Paul Moore as well as MASTERSPY Producer/Director Lawrence Schiller to watch the sentencing at the Alexandria Federal Courthouse.
